Threats of violence and death were another common theme of these posters. What had been, historically, violent forms of freshman hazing were broadly prohibited by American college and university administrations around the turn of the century. Posters became a (mostly) non-violent alternative to violence. But comically violent illustrations - skull and crossbones, coffins, scalpings, and even beheadings (see "YOUR GOODFORNOTHIN' CARCASES," ) - hearkened back to the old traditions.
