Among dozens of colleges with a tradition of such posters, two warrant attention for the consistently high quality of their illustrations. The first is Penn State. An often-repeated and clever motif in PSU's posters was a menacing sophomore pointing to a rules poster - a poster within a poster - with multiple illustrations. The PSU sophomores backed up their threats, too. One of the photo postcards depicts three freshmen in 1913 coated head to toe in molasses and feathers for breaking the rules, "One fellow was with a girl, one crossed the Campus & one was caught smoking." (See "NOTICE TO FRESHMEN" for another Penn State poster.)
