The memorial plaques on the wall read, on the left: Rev. Dr. Joseph Priestley, Born March 24, 1733, founded this Society 1794. Died February 6, 1804. This tablet erected by the congregation in 1854, as a testimony of their respect for his piety, love of truth and scientific attainments. And on the right hand side: Rev. James Kay. The faithful Pastor of this church for twenty five years, and a true disciple of Christ, he went about doing good. A grateful people here record his worth. Born June 21, 1777. Died September 22, 1847. The portrait of Priestley directly over the altar is either by or after Gilbert Stuart. For other versions of this painting, see P/P933.5b M and P/P933.5g S. |
